North Carolina Loses Ed Davis 6-8 Weeks
Davis broke the lunate bone in his left wrist, according to a release issued by the school. The injury occurred midway through the second half of the Tar Heels' loss to Duke. Davis had his wrist taped and returned to the game but did not score.
The school said it did not expect Davis' injury to require surgery.
"We're all extremely disappointed for Ed and for our entire team," head coach Roy Williams said in a statement. "It's hard to lose any starter, but when you lose someone likely for the rest of the season who does so many different things for your team, it's a significant loss.
"However, we have to band together and try to overcome this latest adversity caused by injury."
Davis' injury comes on the heels of a pair of injuries to post players. Sophomore Tyler Zeller, who missed much of his freshman year with a broken wrist, suffered a stress fracture in his foot against Clemson Jan. 13 and isn't expected back until at least next week. Meanwhile, freshman Travis Wear is out indefinitely with a severely sprained ankle.
Davis is averaging 13.4 points and 9.6 rebounds per game.
The defending national champion Tar Heels are just 13-11 overall, 2-7 in the ACC and, barring a miraculous run in the ACC tournament, are unlikely to make the NCAA tournament.
