Say this for the Cincinnati Bengals, all the jokes and criticism of their penchant for employing players who run afoul of the law doesn't affect the way they do business. Judging by news out of Ohio this week, it's quite possible they enjoy the talk because they're doing everything they can to assure that it continues to be a talking point. The team has offered a contract to wide receiver Matt Jones, held a workout with cornerback Pacman Jones and expressed interest in wide receiver Donte Stallworth. That's a heckuva lot of malfeasance right there, to the point where you wonder if the Bengals aren't just having some fun with people's perceptions of the team at the expense of actually trying to find players who will help them attempt to repeat as AFC North champs.
Matt Jones hasn't played football since the Jaguars cut him in early 2009 for violating his probation on a 2008 cocaine possession charge. The converted college quarterback had his most productive NFL season in 2008 and the Bengals do have a need at receiver, though. The Titans have also reportedly offered Jones a contract, so, one way or the other, it looks like his exile will be coming to an end.
Pacman Jones's criminal exploits probably need no recounting beyond the following three words: Making It Rain. He played nine games for the Cowboys in 2008, didn't get a sniff from a team during the 2009 season and told his Twitter followers that he worked out for the first time in six months on February 2nd.
If he's able to play, the Bengals might be a good fit. Not just because the orange in their uniforms would be a familiar color, but because Jones was close to the late Chris Henry when both were at West Virginia.
Stallworth, the final piece of the didn't play in 2009 gang that can't shoot straight, was released by the Browns just after being reinstated from the suspension he earned for DUI manslaughter. He has also drawn interest from the Lions, although they can't offer the comfort of a roster full of players who understand the prison lifestyle.
The Bengals dream of having a roster composed solely of ex-cons is closer to becoming a reality. You can do it, Mike Brown!
UPDATE: Sources are saying that Matt Jones has joined the fold on Friday. The Cincinnati Enquirer pegs it as a one-year deal for around $700,000.
