DALLAS -- The Rookies snapped a seven-year losing streak against the Sophomores, taking the 2010 T-Mobile Rookie Challenge by a score of 140-128. Tyreke Evans was named the game's MVP, and finished with 26 points, five rebounds, and five assists, and DeJuan Blair dominated the glass with 23 rebounds. This is an exhibition game, though, and as such, we're concerned with things far more frivolous: like the fact that Russell Westbrook had a shot at Kevin Durant's scoring record of 46 points, but mysteriously sat the game's final four-plus minutes while stuck at 40.
The Sophomores' head coach, Patrick Ewing, took this game more seriously than he probably should have, and afterwards, lamented his team's lack of rebounding ... in a freaking All-Star game. But when asked why he didn't give Westbrook a shot to break the record, he claimed he didn't know the record was at stake.
Meanwhile, Westbrook claimed he was just asking back into the game to try to help his team win, but I can't help but think he had motives that were slightly more selfish -- especially considering the amount of smack talk he could run in the locker room at Durant if indeed he was able to break the record.
I'm a self-admitted conspiracy nut, so maybe I'm overreacting here. Either way, it's a mildly interesting subplot -- at least to me. Video of their post-game interviews can be seen below, and you can judge for yourself if there was something more sinister at play.
