Titans Close to Locking Up Amano
According to the Tennessean, the Titans are very close to working out a long-term contract extension with offensive guard Eugene Amano. The deal keeps Amano from becoming an unrestricted free agent and will also likely ensure that Tennessee's starting five remain intact.TheTitans locked up tackles Michael Roos and David Stewart to long-term deals last year and signed free agent guard Jake Scott to a three-year deal before the 2009 season. If they re-up Amano that leaves center Kevin Mawae, 39, as the only starter on the Titans' line who isn't locked up through next season. Considering his age and the length of his time in Tennessee, it's likely he'll be re-signed at some point this offseason as well.
By locking up Amano, Tennessee will be keeping one of the better offensive linemen in a very weak free agent class off the market. With the paucity of quality unrestricted free agents (thanks in large part to players needing six years to be free agents this year instead of the normal four), Amano would have been in demand, so Tennessee is wise to keep him from getting a chance to see what other teams would be willing to offer.
