(Feb. 16) -- An airline passenger "took a swing" at former Republican presidential candidate and Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney aboard an AirCanada flight from Vancouver to Los Angeles on Monday, after Romney asked the passenger to return his seat back to the upright position while awaiting take off.

Romney, 62, and his wife, Ann, who were returning from the Olympics, were reportedly sitting in the economy section before takeoff when Romney's routine request enraged the passenger sitting in front of his wife.

"The passenger became physically violent. Gov. Romney did not retaliate, but instead let the airline crew respond to the incident," Romney's spokesman, Eric Fehrnstrom, said in a statement to AOL News.

The plane subsequently returned to the gate, where Royal Canadian Mounted Police removed the passenger and his luggage. Romney was not injured, and the flight took off shortly after the passenger was removed.

The Romneys had been in Vancouver since Friday, celebrating the opening of the Olympic Games as guests of honor, as Romney was president and CEO of the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.
