Just last month, Karen Davidson, wife of the late Bill Davidson, announced she's looking to sell a Pistons franchise which has been in the family for 36 years. On the way to a sale, the Pistons today announced they've lost the leader of the business side of the franchise. Tom Wilson, who has been with the franchise since 1978, resigned his position as CEO and president of Palace Sports and Entertainment. The Pistons announced Alan Ostfeld, the franchise's chief operating officer and a Joe Dumars deputy, will assume Wilson's position. Wilson told the Detroit Free Press he's pursuing "other opportunities," with no indication if the eventual sale of the team caused Wilson to look elsewhere, or whether Davidson wanted Ostfeld in the point position as the team seeks bidders. Whatever the case, the timing is curious.
It's worth mentioning that even when the Pistons struggle on the court, the franchise finds itself among the most lucrative in the league. The late Davidson and Wilson sure seemed like a fantastic, stable team from the outside. There's no telling if Ostfeld will look for changes on the basketball side -- he's been working with recently maligned Dumars since 2002 -- nor whether he's confident he'll be able to stick around once ownership changes.
