WBC welterweight (147 pounds) champion, Andre Berto, of Winter Haven, Fla., will defend his crown against southpaw, former world champion, Carlos Quintana, of Puerto Rico, on April 10 at the Bank of America Center in Sunrise, Florida, near Fort Lauderdale, his promoter, Lou DiBella, told FanHouse on Thursday.A 26-year-old, Haitian-American who has been assisting with disaster relief since that island nation was rocked by an earthquake, Berto (25-0, 19 KOs) will donate proceeds from the event toward that continuing effort.
The card is being billed, "Fighting For Haiti," according to DiBella.
In the wake of the earthquake, a distraught Berto pulled out of a scheduled Jan. 30 bout with 38-year-old, WBC welterweight super champion, Shane Mosley (46-5, 39 KOs), who will now face 32-year-old, unbeaten, Floyd Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs) on May 1.
The only man to defeat Paul Williams (38-1, 27 KOs), the 33-year-old Quintana (27-2, 21 KOs) is coming off of December's junior middleweight (154 pounds), third-round, technical knockout of Jesse Feliciano (15-8-3, nine KOs), of Las Vegas, on the undercard of Williams' majority decision victory over Sergio Martinez.
Quintana had dethroned Williams as WBO welterweight titlist in February 2008, but was knocked out in the first round of their rematch four months later.
Quintana rebounded from that setback with October's fourth-round stoppage of Joshua Onyango, which was also contested at 154 pounds.
Quintana's only other loss was by fifth-round knockout against former world champion Miguel Cotto in December of 2006.
The Berto-Quintana undercard will feature IBF light heavyweight (175 pounds) champion, Tavoris Cloud (20-0, 18 KOs) of Tallahassee, Fla., making his first defense against Jamaican-born, 41-year-old former world champion, Glen Johnson (50-13-2, 34 KOs), of Miami.
The 28-year-old Cloud earned the title with August's unanimous decision over former world champ, Clinton Woods.
Johnson is coming off of a Feb. 5, sixth-round stoppage of 30-year-old Yusaf Mack (28-3-2, 17 KOs), of New York, ending the loser's six-bout winning streak.
Johnson, who rebounded from November's unanimous decision loss to unbeaten, IBO and interim WBC king, Chad Dawson (29-0, 17 KOs), could become the oldest man to win a light heavyweight title if he defeats Cloud.
In victory, Johnson would surpass Bob Fitzimmons, who decisioned George Gardner over 20 rounds on Nov. 25, 1903, at the age of 40.
