The Memphis Grizzlies have the worst bench in the league. It's not close. The New Jersey Nets bring more off the pine than the Grizzlies. So with the Grizzlies in competition for a playoff spot, discussions had taken place about how to obtain a bench scorer to help out with the young team. One such target was Utah's Ronnie Brewer, who has struggled with all the depth available to Utah. Today, it looks like Memphis got their man.
The Memphis Commercial-Appeal and Salt Lake Tribune report that the Grizzlies have obtained Brewer for a protected 2011 first round draft pick. Brewer is having a down year with only 9.5 points per game and his rebound and assist numbers are nothing to write home about, but he's still a considerable upgrade for the Grizzlies.
Brewer's departure from Utah means the Jazz will have to sign someone to fill their 13th roster spot, leaving open the possibility of another call-up from the D-League, similar to their situation with Sundiata Gaines. The Grizzlies meanwhile will look to push for a playoff run with Brewer off the bench, and now find themselves with at least some semblance of a bench unit, even if it is still one of the weakest in the league.
The University of Arkansas product will at least provide a defensive presence and wing scorer for the club, which features one of the worst defenses in the NBA. The Grizzlies have three picks in the first round of the 2010 NBA Draft.
