VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- As head coach of the Chinese women's hockey team in 2008-09, Paul Strople was responsible for leading the team to qualify for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. The Canadian-born former European hockey player even had a specific clause in his contract which stated that he would be the coach of the team in Vancouver. But after a 9th place finish at the 2009 World Championship, Chinese hockey officials said there was a clause in his contract, which was only written in Chinese, not English, which stated that a poor showing in that tournament would allow them to find a new coach for the games. Obviously, this was news to Strople.
FanHouse caught up with Strople to talk about his controversial dismissal from the team, why Chinese women's hockey has fallen on hard times after a 4th place finish in Nagano, the current state of women's hockey and why he decided to come to Vancouver despite not being a part of the games.
