Wolves Convince Darko to Try Again

Darko Milicic's had more chances than a 14-hour Monopoly game. None have ended in success. The Detroit disaster, in which the No. 2 pick in a great draft became nothing more than a human victory cigar, begat a stillborn Orlando career only moderately more prolific than that of Fran Vasquez.

Darko still managed a second contract, with the Grizzlies. But Milicic never made himself a playing time priority, and fell out of favor by the time Lionel Hollins took over in 2008-09. Quentin Richardson's Eternal Flight sent Darko to New York as nothing but an expiring contract. Milicic lasted exactly eight games in Mike D'Antoni's Knicks rotation. For several months, he has requested to be bought out of his contract so he could finish the basketball season in Europe, where he plans to play for the rest of his career.

But New York held onto him as a trade chip (that expiring contract remains valuable!), and eventually sent him to David Kahn's Camp for Weird Big Dudes, netting the very slightly cheaper Brian Cardinal. The Knicks saved about $300,000 in the transaction. Why did Kahn pull the trigger? Because he believes in second third fourth fifth chances, of course.

Despite continued assurances of Darko's buy-out interest, the Wolves requested Milicic's presence in Minneapolis. And now, just a couple days past the deadline, the Wolves will send Darko onto the floor in a Minnesota jersey.

I don't know whether it says more about the Wolves, that they'd trade for and play Darko at this point, or about Darko, that it's notably hilarious that a team would do this for him. I'm flummoxed, I must say.
