Julius Peppers to Hit the Market

The Carolina Panthers had a tough decision to make in regards to game-changing defensive end Julius Peppers, and in the end, they decided it wasn't worth paying $21.8 million to keep him around. Peppers will become a free agent, as the Panthers do not plan to use the franchise tag on the 30-year-old, according to NFL Network's Mike Lombardi.

Peppers will be looking for a big contract in free agency after posting this sixth season (in eight total) of at least 11 sacks. But will he get it?

The Boston Globe reports that one AFC executive feels that Peppers is a terrible big-money investment, predicting that with a big contract, Peppers wouldn't reach double-digit sacks for "the rest of his career."

It's a fair point to make. While Peppers can take over any game, he has a reputation of disappearing for long stretches, even for weeks at a time. In fact, he suffered one such stretch in the middle of 2009, recording no sacks and just two tackles during a three-game span. That stigma is certain to play against him in free agency.

That being said, odds are Peppers will find a team or two willing to dole out some serious cash and take the serious risk that comes with it. There won't be much talent available to teams looking to upgrade through free agency, and the threat of an uncapped year could cause several owners to loosen up the purse-strings and shoot for a title. Time will tell which teams are willing to pay that price.

One thing is certain though -- Peppers won't be tagged again in 2010, which means he's played his last down for the Carolina Panthers.
