Free agent nose tackle Vince Wilfork recently said that getting designated with the franchise tag by the New England Patriots would be a slap in the face. He went as far as to say the money that comes with being a franchised defensive lineman -- slightly more than $7 million a year -- was "decent money for most people." Well, just as most suspected, Wilfork will have to endure that contract for the 2010 season, unless he and the Patriots agree on a long-term deal before the season begins. He has officially been franchised by the Patriots for the 2010 season, according to Comcast Sports New England.
To reiterate, the franchise designation doesn't preclude Wilfork and the Patriots from mutually agreeing on a long-term contract extension, but it does prevent any other team from entering the mix -- unless they want to cough up two first-round draft picks. Basically, it is the Patriots' protection from losing the player without big compensation.
Wilfork, 28, qualified for his second Pro Bowl in 2009 and is one of the better defensive lineman in the league. His wife has taken to Twitter to discuss the occurrence as well.
