Want a Spot in the Reds Team Picture? Your Moment Has Arrived

When the Reds signed Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman to a contract that could be worth as much as $50 million this offseason, some people wondered exactly how the normally stingy team would come up with the sheckels to pay it off. The answer? They're selling spots on the team.

Well, sort of selling spots on the team. The Reds are auctioning off the chance for a couple of fans to throw their arms around Arthur Rhodes and be part of the 2010 team picture. The shot will be taken on April 21 before the Reds' game with the Dodgers and you also get tickets to the game and some Reds gear as part of the package. The opening bid is $500 for what the Reds' Web site deems an "extremely unique and priceless opportunity."
Painful syntax aside -- unique works just fine all by itself, fellas -- it's a pretty cool idea by the Reds. Who wouldn't want to have a shot like that on their wall, especially if you could come up with a believable back story for why you're rubbing elbows with Dusty Baker and Francisco Cordero? And, thanks to the 5-foot-6, 165-pound Daniel Ray Herrera, there's a pretty good chance you won't wind up as the guy who looks least like a professional athlete. Score!

We were kidding about the Chapman thing, as well. The proceeds from the auction actually go to charity, so buying tickets, beer and that notorious Cincinnati chili remain the best way for John Q. Public to help bolster the Reds' payroll.

One final question, because it isn't clear from the rules and regulations on the auction site. Could a player on the fringe of making the team, let's say Justin Lehr, get involved in the bidding as a way to improve his chances of actually being with the big-league club come April 21? That could wind up pushing the price much higher than expected, but it might be worth it to keep yourself in the mix rather than in Louisville.
