The Atlanta Braves announced Tuesday that they have reached an agreement with infield prospect Edward Salcedo.

The 18-year-old native of the Dominican Republic is considered one of the top players in the international free-agent class this season. At 6-foot-3, Salcedo is a solid offensive threat and possesses outstanding defensive skills with a plus throwing arm and above-average baserunning ability.

Johnny Almaraz, the Braves' director of international scouting, had high praise for Salcedo and feels this signing is of major importance to the team.

"We feel that Edward is one of this year's most talented prospects," said Almaraz. "He has outstanding makeup and the combination of his fielding and hitting ability make him one of the top international players we've seen in a while."

This isn't the first time that Salcedo has been signed by a major league team, at least reportedly. In 2007, a Cleveland newspaper announced that Salcedo had been signed by the Indians. That deal fell through, however, when Salcedo's age came into question.

The Braves asked Major League Baseball to investigate Salcedo's age and his birth date was found to be July 30, 1991. Since this made the Dominican prospect 18 years old, the Braves executed the deal.

Salcedo will still need to pass a physical exam prior to the deal being finalized. That exam will have to wait until Salcedo is granted a visa to enter the United states.

Many experts feel that Salcedo is just as talented as players found in the first round of the major league draft. That's good news since the Braves don't have a first-round pick this year because they signed Billy Wagner in the offseason.
