Twins reliever Jose Mijares missed some offseason activities earlier in the month due to visa problems, so when he didn't make it to camp by the reporting deadline on Monday night, the club probably assumed the lefty was having similar problems leaving his native Venezuela. It seems like one or two players get hung up with visa problems every spring and that's just a fact of life with so many players traveling internationally.
As it turns out, though, something much more humorous was keeping Mijares out of the States. He was caught up in security when he tried to board his plane because his luggage carried what was apparently deemed to be a dangerous-looking tube of hair gel. Once the case of the mysterious hair gel was resolved, Mijares was allowed to board a later flight and he made it to Twins camp earlier today.
The Twins don't seem terribly upset about the whole Situation, and given Mijares' exceptional performance last season, that's probably understandable. Mijares and his hair styling products held left-handed hitters to a .155/.228/.252 line in 2009 and his ERA for the year was 2.34. So long as he keeps the shenanigans to a minimum from here on out, he probably doesn't have a lot to worry about.
