When you're a receiver that plays for the league's best passing attack, you're always oh-so-close to rising to fantasy prominence. A mid-season injury could open up the door, as could poor performance ahead of you. With Kevin Walter a free agent, the next star to rise may be Jacoby Jones.Walter had a bit of an off-year, totaling 53 catches on 70 targets for 611 yards and two TDs. This came one year after Walter had nearly 900 yards and eight TDs in the 2008 season, mighty fine numbers for a player with such low expectations. Walter isn't guaranteed to be back in Houston in 2010, leaving a sizable hole in the passing offense.
Could Jacoby Jones step in and be solid as a starter? Coach Gary Kubiak thinks so, and he recently said in an interview that he thinks Jones could be a No. 1 or No. 2 starter in the league if he puts everything together.
Jones certainly did a lot with a little last season. He received only 40 targets, yet made 27 catches for 437 yards, with six of his receptions going for TDs. How scary is the Houston offense with another big-play receiver on the same field as Andre Johnson for most of the team's offensive snaps? Jones closed out the season with TDs against Miami and New England, gaining 79 yards on two receptions against the Dolphins and 65 yards on five receptions against the Patriots. That could prove to be a small taste of things to come.
While Jones has considerable upside, he does have a ways to go before he reaches it. But if the team commits to him as a starter, he'll at least get the opportunity to reach that upside. Even if Walter does return, it likely won't be for starter money after a poor season. That would leave Jones still having a shot at a breakout season.
He's not Pierre Garcon or Julian Edelman, but less fanfare could make him easier to acquire. One owner in my dynasty league felt high enough on Jones that he traded me Hines Ward in a deal with Jones as the central piece on my side. Other dynasty-league owners should be all over the guy as well.
