When the Vancouver Games end on February 28th, the city will set its plan in motion to convert the newly erected Olympic Athlete's Village into luxury apartments for sale to the pubic. The 1,1000 residential spaces currently occupied by athletes will be divided into 730 condos, 120 rental apartments and 250 affordable rental apartments. Unit size will vary from 500 square feet to 3,000 square feet. Developers aren't releasing any info about which athletes stayed where, so buyers will have to give up the dream of locking down a Gold medal room.

By 2020, Vancouver hopes to house more than 13,000 people in the newly developed Southeast False Creek area. The community centre currently being used as a restaurant and office space for Olympic athletes will offer its future residents a full-size gym, an arts and crafts room and a fitness studio among other amenities. The community centre will also provide 6,000 feet of commercial space.

Young families will enjoy the planned elementary school and 3-5 licensed childcare facilities. There's also talk of a community garden space, playgrounds and 10 hectares of park land.

Prior to 1932, visiting athletes were housed in rented locations around the host city - a costly arrangement that changed for the better when Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of IOC, suggested building an Olympic Village.

The first Olympic Village was constructed for the Los Angeles 1932 Games and housed male athletes only - female athletes stayed in a nearby hotel. While the village was dismantled after the Games, subsequent villages, like the Vancouver Olympic Village have been converted into community spaces.
