In the wake of Canada's dominating 7-3 win against Russia on Wednesday night, NBC analysts Mike Milbury and Jeremy Roenick were discussing the beat-down, as well as a controversial play involving Canadian defenseman Dan Boyle and Russian forward Alexander Semin. Not only was Milbury glowing in his praise of Boyle for responding to Semin's hit with a dangerous slew-foot, he topped it off by saying of the Russian team, "I was really disappointed that these guys came with their Eurotrash game."
Now, Russia certainly deserves plenty of criticism for laying a massive egg in what was supposed to be one of the best matchups of the tournament. But Eurotrash?
Roenick looked stunned, while Bill Patrick, the third member of the panel, asked, almost in awe, "Did you really just say Eurotrash?"
Of course, this isn't the first time in this tournament Milbury's words have raised a few eyebrows. On Tuesday, during an intermission of the Canada vs. Germany game, Milbury described the play of Uwe Krupp's German club by saying: "He's basically asking his guys to be fire hydrants and they're getting peed on right now."
During the preliminary round he and Roenick had an awkward exchange when discussing Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin, leading many fans and bloggers to wonder if the two would come to blows before the end of the Olympics.
Since he joined the NBC broadcast team, it's been painfully obvious that Milbury is supposed to be America's answer to Don Cherry; loud screaming, the occasional controversial comment or viewpoint and a dislike for anything hockey-related that doesn't come from Kingston or upstate New York. And comments like "Eurotrash" when discussing European or Russian hockey will build that reputation for you. If NBC is going to go down that path, at least force him to dress in bold suits that burn the retinas of the viewer. You know, just for our entertainment.
