Former NFL and USC back Mosi Tatupu is dead at the age of 54. He died at an Attleboro, Mass., hospital, although a cause has not yet been reported. He was a standout for the NFL's New England Patriots as well as the USC Trojans during some of their better years, contributing to the Trojans' 1974 national championship team.

Tatupu's legacy includes being among the first wave of Polynesian college football players in the early 1970's. His and others' success helped forge a bond between people of Polynesian descent and the game of college football particularly at programs along the west coast. He is also the father of future USC All America linebacker Lofa Tatupu, who helped the Trojans to a championship 20 years later, in 2004. If that weren't enough he earned mention in an episode of The Simpsons. FanHouse mourns his passing.
