Thabeet Becomes Highest Pick Ever Assigned to NBA D-League

Hasheem Thabeet, the second overall pick in the NBA Draft, selected ahead of Tyreke Evans, Stephen Curry, and about twenty other rookies getting significant minutes, has been assigned to the D-League. D-League blog Ridiculous Upside was the first to break the story.

Thabeet is the highest draft pick ever to be assigned to the D-League. Thabeet will be with the Dakota Wizards for ten days, logging a handful of games.

He's been told to work on his offensive skills. Which is a little bit like sending someone to Betty Ford and saying, "Oh, and you should work on NOT having substance abuse problems." It's kind of obvious from the fact they woke up naked on the hood of their car.

Earlier this week, coach Lionel Hollins moved Hamed Haddadi above Thabeet on the depth chart, and rightfully so. Thabeet certainly has the physical skills described by the scouts who were wowed by him, but he also lacks the ability to do anything requiring basketball IQ. He has incredible blocking ability on the weak-side but gets lost in off-ball movement, fouls too much, and has trouble with the whole "put the little ball in the little round hole with the net attached" thing.

While it's great that the D-League is being trusted with a player of his draft stock, this feels more like a last-ditch move to try to spur some sort of skill-growth out of Thabeet. Thabeet is 23 years old, but maybe he's got some room to grow and something will click while he's down with Dakota.

In unrelated news, 20 year-old Tyreke Evans is averaging 20 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game.
