It's been a rough week for ESPN SportsCenter anchor Scott Van Pelt. First he got pranked on the air by someone who sounded nothing like Brian Westbrook claiming to be Brian Westbrook. And then, late Thursday night, on the air, he said the word, the big one, the queen-mother of dirty words, the F-dash-dash-dash word. He then issued the apology you can see above; the swearing itself is below.

Van Pelt's F-bomb came when he wrongly thought ESPN had already gone to commercial. Later in the show he apologized, saying, "Earlier in the program as we were heading to break my microphone was open and I uttered a profanity. For that I apologize for anyone I offended."

There's no word yet on whether ESPN will discipline Van Pelt, who last year was reportedly suspended for criticisms of Bud Selig. But I hope nothing happens to him. His profanity wasn't malicious, it was just a mistake. At most, let his mom wash his mouth out with soap.
