Reds Prospect Yonder Alonso to Try New Positions This Spring

Yonder AlonsoWhen the Reds drafted Yonder Alonso with their first pick (and the seventh overall) of the 2008 draft, two things were immediately apparent. The first was that they were getting a good polished hitter with one of the better bats in that year's draft. The second was that the one position that he had the most experience at in college was first base, a position that Joey Votto has locked down for what seems to be the foreseeable future.

Alonso only played in 84 games in his first season in the Reds' system due to injuries, but he put together an excellent 46/41 K/BB ratio (for a power hitter, at least) and even though his .464 slugging percentage was less than the Reds had hoped for, he's still likely to move quickly through the upper levels of the Reds' organization.

Because of that, MLB.com is reporting that the Reds have him working out at third base and corner outfield positions in an attempt to find a new position.

GM Walt Jocketty said that he doesn't see Votto, who has limited experience in the outfield at Triple-A and with Cincinnati, going anywhere, so it's going to be on Alonso to adapt. Moving to third base or a corner spot puts him into competition with one of the Reds' other top prospects, 2007 first-rounder Todd Frazier. Frazier's hit well across the system (.296/.367/.491), but he's yet to settle into a position and he's spent time all over the diamond including in left field and at third base.

The Reds will have to find positions for both guys if they keep hitting in the minors, but it's probably best they're getting a head start on things with Alonso by having him try new positions now rather than at the big-league level, whenever he makes his debut.
