On Sunday, Chilean Defense Minister Francisco Vidal said it was a tragic mistake not to immediately sound a tsunami warning after Saturday's 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck. "The navy committed an error in not alerting the tsunami," Vidal said at a news conference.
As newly released video shows, the 10-foot-high tidal wave unleashed by the quake resulted in widespread devastation and death. Britain's Channel 4 shot the following video along the coast, close to the quake's epicenter near Concepción.
Four hundred miles out to sea, on Robinson Crusoe Island, much of the town of San Juan Bautista was destroyed when the tsunami struck only minutes after the quake hit. So far, five deaths have been reported, and 11 people remain missing. Property damage from the waves is extensive.
On the mainland, the fishing village of Dichato, population 7,000, was struck by three waves shortly after the sun rose Saturday. Reuters reports that the wall of water destroyed more than 75 percent of the town's structures.
Numerous other towns up and down the Chilean coast -- such as Pichilemu, Pelluhue and Concepción -- were ravaged by the oncoming water.
