Oh to be young and able to hit a baseball.News is circulating on Tuesday morning that the Arizona Diamondbacks and outfielder Justin Upton are close to agreement on a six-year contract extension that would pay Upton in the neighborhood of $50 million.
The deal was first reported by Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal, and though the Diamondbacks do not comment publicly on extensions until they're official, it seems it's only a matter of time before the deal is announced.
Essentially what this contract will do is buy out all three of Upton's arbitration-eligible seasons, and the first two years of his free agency. Which is a pretty good deal for Upton because he's not only going to be getting paid handsomely now, but when this extension ends he'll be hitting the free agent market at the age of 28.
Considering what he's done so far in his young career, that could put Upton in line to cash in big time.
Upton had a line of .300/.366/.532 with 26 home runs, 86 RBI and seven triples for Arizona last season and won't turn 23 until the end of August. The Diamondbacks are also reportedly in the process of working out a similar deal with third baseman Mark Reynolds.
