Washington Capitals general manager George McPhee apparently didn't mind tinkering with a team that holds the best record in hockey. The Capitals acquired four players --- including two notable veterans in defenseman Joe Corvo and forward Eric Belanger --- before the 3 p.m. ET cutoff.
Conversely, the Carolina Hurricanes were a major seller, dealing four players (Corvo, Scott Walker, Andrew Alberts and Aaron Ward) at the deadline and Matt Cullen Niclas Wallin before the Olympic break.
The Hurricanes received defenseman Brian Pothier and prospect forward Oskar Osala in exchange for Corvo, a deal that was announced minutes after the deadline.
Corvo wasn't badly injured by that hit, but he missed a month after he was cut in the lower leg by the skate of Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner later in that Dec. 1 contest. Corvo required surgery to close the gash.
Corvo, who has four goals and eight assists in 34 games, fits the mold of a veteran blue liner that many expected the Capitals to add. He will be an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of the season.
Pothier is the only everyday player the Capitals gave up in order to bolster their roster for the playoff push.
"It's no fun," Capitals center Brendan Morrison said before the deadline. "A lot of guys have been through it, but it's not fun to deal with. When you're on a good team like this, nobody wants to go anywhere."
Earlier in the day, Walker, a veteran right winger who will also be an unrestricted free agent at season's end, was dealt to Washington for a seventh-round pick. Walker was in his third season in Carolina and 14th overall in the NHL. He had shoulder surgery and missed 21 games before he returned to action against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday.
The physical Walker has three goals and two assists in 33 games this season.
The Capitals sent a second-round pick to Minnesota in exchange for Belanger, who has 13 goals and 22 assists this season.
Washington also reacquired defenseman Milan Jurcina from the Columbus Blue Jackets a sixth-round pick, less than three months after he was dealt by Washington as part of trade for Jason Chimera. Jurchina is currently day-to-day with an undisclosed injury.
