We've got just hours to go before the start of NFL free agency, but things are already starting to heat up. The Cardinals have dumped safety Antrel Rolle so they could avoid handing him a $4 million roster bonus on Friday. The move adds a pretty good safety to the list of players who will be shopping their wares when the clock hits 12:01 a.m. The move isn't a particularly big surprise. Rolle's bonus and $8 million salary for the 2010 season made him a pretty obvious target for the unemployment line. The Cardinals had toyed with signing him to a long term deal before push came to shove and they'd probably like to find a way to bring him back, but Adrian Wilson's presence and Rolle's demands make things more difficult.
Rolle has made it clear that he wants in the neighborhood of $8 million a year, a number that would make him better compensated than Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu, to name two safeties widely considered to be better than Rolle. What's more, Wilson is due to make $6.5 million in 2010 and it's hard to make an argument that Rolle is a more important part of the Cardinals defense.
Giving Rolle a contract that pays him in the same neighborhood as Wilson could easily create another contract headache for the Cardnals going forward. That said, it's hard to picture too many teams hitting the number that Rolle is hunting for and that might lead him back to Arizona. It will take a while for that to happen, though, as Rolle's agent Drew Rosenhaus isn't one for settling until it is absolutely the last resort.
The Redskins and Bears are both rumored to be interested in Rolle, and there's never been a free agent who wasn't happy to hear that Daniel Snyder might like to sign his checks. The Giants are also in need of a safety, but they've been preaching fiscal restraint over the last few days. He'd make sense in all three places and figures to be one of the hottest targets in the first hours of free agency.
