The San Diego Chargers have changed their minds about running back Darren Sproles.Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting that the Chargers are placing a first- and third-round tender on Sproles, reversing course after telling him last week that they wouldn't tender him at all and would let him test the market as an unrestricted free agent.
That means Sproles will get a one-year contract offer with a salary of $7.27 million from the Chargers. He can either sign it, try to work out an extension or sign an offer sheet with another team -- but any other team would have to send its first- and third-round picks to San Diego in order to get Sproles.
Acee cites an unnamed source in saying that Sproles was scheduled to visit Kansas City, St. Louis, Philadelphia and Washington. That's a rather curious statement, considering that those teams aren't allowed to have contact with Sproles until 12:01 a.m.
But it's probably moot now, as Sproles will almost certainly be staying with the Chargers, whether it's on the one-year tender or a long-term deal.
In 2009, Sproles carried 93 times for 343 yards and three touchdowns and caught 45 passes for 497 yards and four touchdowns in addition to being the Chargers' primary punt and kickoff returner. In 2010 he's expected to become a more integral part of the Chargers' offense with LaDainian Tomlinson gone.
