Dallas placed the first- and third-round tender on wide receiver Miles Austin Wednesday, in an effort to ensure that their breakout star wide receiver didn't find a new home. After making just 18 total catches during his first three seasons in the league, Austin turned into Tony Romo's No. 1 option in 2009, hauling in 81 receptions for 1,320 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Cowboys had been trying to work out a long-term deal with Austin, 25. With the two sides still unable to reach an agreement as free agency approached, Dallas did what it could.
Austin will make $3.168 million in 2010, and would cost any team that now pries him away from Dallas its first- and third-round draft picks.
Miles joins the Jets' Braylon Edwards and San Diego's Malcolm Floyd and Vincent Jackson as high-profile receivers who have been slapped with the highest possible tender. Denver's Brandon Marshall was given just a first-round tender, which will make him particularly attractive, given the market.
The tender doesn't prohibit a team from trading a player, so it's possible -- though relatively unlikely -- that Dallas could still unload Austin if extension talks fall apart.
