Jason TerryThe Dallas Mavericks are soaring right now, winning their ninth consecutive game on Wednesday night. Unfortunately, if they're to continue to extend their league-best winning streak, they'll have to overcome the loss of Jason Terry, who is scheduled to have surgery Friday to repair a fractured orbital bone on the left side of his face, the team announced Thursday via press release.

Terry suffered the injury after taking an errant elbow from Corey Brewer to his face late in the third quarter; adding insult to injury, Terry was actually whistled for a foul on the play. After leaving the game for several minutes, Terry eventually returned, scoring seven of his 26 points.

It's unclear how long the Mavericks will be without Terry, the team's second-leading scorer (17.0 points per game), but Terry doesn't seem overly concerned, telling ESPN Dallas via text message "Not long" when asked how long he'll be sidelined.

Somewhat ironically, the injury happened during a game in which the Mavericks were already taking preventions to avoid injury: Jason Kidd was a healthy scratch on Wednesday, sitting out for just the second time all year.

"We're going to sit him because of the string of games we've had," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle told reporters before the game, the team's 10th in 16 days. "He's perfectly healthy and we want to keep it that way. It's been a grueling stretch for us and this is what we're going to do."

With Terry sidelined, the team will rely upon Kidd even more so, as well as J.J. Barea and rookie Rodrigue Beaubois.
