Antrel Rolle was part of a Cardinal exodus on Day One of free agency, signing with the Giants for $15 million guaranteed.Sources confirmed late Friday night that former Cardinals safety Antrel Rolle has reached agreement with the New York Giants on a five-year, $37 million contract that includes $15 million in guaranteed money and makes him the highest-paid safety in the league. The Giants and Rolle agreed to the terms of the deal early Friday, and Rolle spent the afternoon taking a team physical. But the deal wasn't finalized until after Rolle called his former team and gave the Cardinals a chance to match the offer.

A Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel report says the Cardinals, who earlier in the day lost free-agent linebacker Karlos Dansby to the Dolphins and traded receiver Anquan Boldin to the Ravens, did in fact match the offer, but that Rolle told them he felt he'd be a better fit in the Giants' 4-3 defensive scheme. Regardless, the end result is the one that's been expected all day -- Rolle is a Giant, and helps shore up a secondary that never recovered from the early-season loss of safety Kenny Phillips.

The Giants believe Phillips will make a recovery from his injury, but they're not sure he'll be 100 percent by Opening Day. The Rolle signing gives them insurance at the position at worst and depth at the position at best. If Phillips does come back fully healthy in time to start the season, the Giants will boast a safety tandem as strong as any in the league.

The Dolphins, before locking up Dansby, also made a play for Rolle. Their best offer to him was something in the neighborhood of $30 million for five years with $12 million guaranteed, according to the same source. They knew the Giants were offering more, but they hoped Rolle would take less to sign with them since he's from South Florida and Florida has no state income tax. But the Dolphins also knew they were a long shot once they learned Rolle was visiting the Giants on the first day of free agency.

The Giants now turn their attention to their linebacking corps and the interior of their defensive line -- two areas they hope to address in the draft or in what remains of free agency. They were never serious players for Dansby, in spite of being linked to him in early off-season reports.
