A key cog to the Indianapolis Colts defense won't be anywhere during this free agency period. Middle linebacker Gary Brackett has agreed to ink a five-year deal to stay in Indianapolis, the Indy Star reports. The deal is reportedly worth $33 million over five years, which would pay Brackett competitively with some of the better linebackers in the NFL. The negotiations were reportedly completed before midnight Thursday evening, which means Brackett never hit the open market. Brackett, 29, has been with the Colts for his entire seven year career. The defensive captain has been a starter since 2005, accruing 11 career interceptions and 471 tackles.
Though still overshadowed by their high-octane offensive counterparts, the Colts have developed a decent defense. Only seven teams allowed less points during the regular season in 2009, and they have a strong pass rush.
Brackett is the glue in the middle of the defense that holds them together, so it was a quite important task for the front office to get this deal done before he hit free agency.
