Nate BurlesonIf the early indications are true, Detroit could be very active during this NFL offseason -- and the Lions wasted no time making a splash in the free-agent market, reportedly agreeing to a deal with wide receiver Nate Burleson early Friday morning.

Burleson is a seven-year vet who spent his last four seasons in Seattle. He missed all but one game in 2008 with a knee injury, but returned in 2009 to make 63 catches for 812 yards and three touchdowns.

The 28-year-old receiver might finally give Detroit the No. 2 receiver it's been looking for to line up opposite superstar Calvin Johnson. The Lions inked free agent Bryant Johnson prior to last season, but he made just 35 catches in a disappointing 2009.

Burleson, with just one season (2004 with Minnesota) over 1,000 yards receiving in his career, won't suddenly develop into a Pro Bowler with Detroit, but he does represent a nice upgrade at the second-receiver slot. If nothing else, he's shown the ability to catch the ball and get downfield on occasion -- both areas that the Lions' receiving corps could use help in.

Scout.com's Adam Caplan was first to report Burleson's move to Detroit. According to NFL.com, the deal is for five years and $25 million with $11 million guaranteed. The $11 million guaranteed is a hefty price tag for Burleson, but the lack of a salary cap plus Detroit's desperation to land a complement for Johnson tipped the scales for the WR.

There was also word late Thursday into Friday that the Lions were courting former Titans defensive lineman Kyle Vanden Bosch and ex-Texans offensive lineman Chester Pitts, as well as rumors that Detroit was nearing a trade for Cleveland defensive tackle Corey Williams.

But Burleson's the first new piece in place in the Motor City, and he gives young franchise QB Matthew Stafford another reliable target to find.
