Reggie BrownThe Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a lot of work to do to revamp their receiving corps, with the acquisition Monday night of Reggie Brown just the beginning.

The Bucs sent a 2011 sixth-round pick to Philadelphia in exchange for Brown, who caught 177 passes for 2,574 yards and 17 touchdowns after being selected by the Eagles in Round 2 of the 2005 draft.

For Brown, the bulk of those numbers came in his first three seasons, as the former Georgia standout was pushed down the depth chart in '08 and '09 by an influx of talented young receivers such as DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant and Kevin Curtis. Brown combined for just 27 catches and one touchdown the last two years.

His productivity should increase in Tampa Bay, where the Bucs have committed to quarterback Josh Freeman, the club's first-round pick last year who started nine games in 2009. The Bucs will be looking for a featured wideout, having parted ways with Antonio Bryant, who hit the free agent market on Friday. After a monster '08 season, Bryant played under the "franchise" designation -- a one-year deal worth $9.88 million -- in '09, but was plagued by a nagging knee injury.

Brown, 29, will compete with incumbent receivers Sammie Stroughter (31 catches as a rookie in '09), chronic underachiever and former first-round pick Michael Clayton (three TDs in last five seasons), kick-coverage specialist Maurice Stovall (44 catches in four seasons), Mark Bradley (former second-round pick of Chicago who was signed after the season) and little-used Brian Clark.

Tampa Bay finished the '09 season ranked 28th in the NFL in total offense, including 24th throwing the ball. Freeman, who went 3-6 as a starter, including a road win at New Orleans. He hit 54.5 percent of his passes for 1,855 yards, 10 touchdowns 18 interceptions and a 59.8 passer rating that was the third-worst (in front of only JaMarcus Russell and Jake Delhomme) in the league.
