Completing a deal that had been in the works for several days, the Falcons sent cornerback Chris Houston to Detroit in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2010 draft. The two teams will also swap fifth-round selections -- Atlanta moving up from No. 18 to No. 2. in that round. The two teams reportedly agreed to the trade over the weekend before finalizing it Monday.
Houston, who will be entering his fourth season in the NFL, became expendable when the Falcons picked up Dunta Robinson in free agency. The 25-year-old Houston started 37 games in his three years with Atlanta.
Houston had 47 tackles and one interception in 12 games last season. He does have just three career interceptions since being drafted No. 41 overall in 2007 by Atlanta, but Detroit will be looking to him for much more.
In fact, Houston's going to be penciled in, for the time being, as Detroit's top cornerback. The Lions released Phillip Buchanon last week and did not re-sign Anthony Henry or Will James, leaving them extremely thin at CB heading into free agency.
The trade for Houston helps, as does Monday's news that Detroit had signed free-agent cornerback Jonathan Wade, formerly of the Rams. Wade started four games for St. Louis last season.
Detroit will continue to scour the free-agent list for more help and are a near-lock to draft a cornerback in April.
