Robert De Niro Vince LombardiLegend has it that Robert De Niro gained 50 pounds to play boxer Jake La Motta in "Raging Bull." Who knows what he'll have to do to get ready to play Vince Lombardi.

ESPN announced Tuesday that, along with the NFL, Andell Entertainment, a Los Angeles-based production company, and De Niro's Tribeca Productions, it will film "Lombardi," a biopic starring De Niro as the legendary Green Bay Packers coach.

The film, scheduled to be released during the weekend between the conference championships and the Super Bowl in 2012, is slated to trace the life of Lombardi from his hiring in Green Bay in 1959 through the legendary Ice Bowl NFL championship game between the Packers and the Dallas Cowboys in 1967.

The film will be based on the book, "Instant Replay," co-written by former Packer offensive lineman Jerry Kramer and author Dick Schaap and will be written by Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth. No director has been named yet.
