When Al Jefferson was arrested for a DWI arrest last week, he said all the right things, releasing a statement in which he apologized to his employer, teammates and fans for his actions. Suspended two games without pay, he could have taken a week off to sulk, but instead he traveled with the team -- on his own dime -- and maintained his conditioning with extra practice. "It was the longest seven days of my life," he told reporters Monday morning. "I feel good. I'm glad I'm back and I have to make sure I stay back this time."
Jefferson's extra work showed: he came back Monday with one of his best games of the year, scoring a season-high 36 points, including 11 in the opening six minutes, and grabbing 13 boards with two blocks. Granted, the Timberwolves lost the game -- the Mavericks steam-rolled Minnesota, 125-112, for their 12th win in a row -- but the fact Jefferson came back strong without any rust was notable.
"The only thing I didn't do this past week was play games," Jefferson said after the game. "I was working real hard before and after practice. I was just real anxious to get back. I felt like I let my teammates down, my fans down. I kind of had lost my confidence.
"I got my confidence back up after my little trouble, and I know what I'm able to do. It's all about finishing these last 18 games off right, for myself and the team."
