The Cleveland Browns might be starting to bring more clarity to their jumbled quarterback situation. The team has set up a visit with free agent Jake Delhomme for Thursday, FanHouse has confirmed. The scheduled visit was first reported by the Cleveland Plain Dealer, though Delhomme's agent, Rick Smith, said via e-mail he could not confirm or deny the trip.
Carolina waived Delhomme last week after he spent seven years as the Panthers' starting QB. Delhomme took the Panthers to the Super Bowl in 2003, the NFC Championship game following the 2005 season and the playoffs in 2008.
But in that '08 playoff game, Delhomme threw five interceptions and fumbled once in a loss to Arizona. It may have affected his psyche, as he then threw a career-high 18 interceptions in 11 starts in 2009. When he broke a finger, Matt Moore became the starter for the final five games, and the Panthers finished 4-1.
Delhomme is a classy, hard-working guy who went 58-40 in his tenure as Carolina's starter. But he's also 35. He could compete to start, but he also seems like a guy who would be a perfect mentor for a young quarterback, like Brady Quinn. There are few guys of high er character in the league than Delhomme.
The Browns released Derek Anderson on Wednesday after acquiring Seneca Wallace from Seattle in a trade. That left them with Quinn, Wallace and Brett Ratliff on the roster.
There have been rumors that Quinn is available for trade, but those rumors have not been confirmed. Quinn probably would welcome a fresh start for a new team, because his experience in Cleveland has not been overly positive. He earned the starting job last season, then was yanked after three games. He returned to start six games, winning two. But his season was cut short by a foot injury that sidelined him the final two games.
The Browns have yet to reveal how the quarterback pieces fit, but they are providing a lot of intrigue.
