NEW YORK -- A St. John's official on Thursday disputed a New York Post report that Red Storm coach Norm Roberts would not return next year. The Post reported that Roberts, who lost his 100th game with the Red Storm Wednesday, would not return for his seventh season.
"We're NIT eligible and athletic director Chris Monasch has been supportive and will comment at season's end," St. John's director of athletic communications Mark Fratto, said.
Fratto also indicated on his Twitter page that he was "headed to Taffner Field House to tape Red Storm Report episode 10 with Coach Roberts."
Following Wednesday's 57-55 loss to Marquette in the second round of the Big East Tournament, Roberts was surrounded by two dozen reporters and discussed his future.
Roberts, who is 81-100 at St. John's, was asked about whether he had won enough games to continue in his role.
"That's all fair and that's life," Roberts said. "We're paid to win games. That's the bottom line in coaching, you're paid to win games. But I think you're also paid along the process [of] making sure things are right.
"I think we've gotten over the hump, now we need to be consistent."
Roberts said when he came to St. John's after a lengthy career as an assistant at Kansas, Illinois, Tulsa and Oral Roberts, the Red Storm's program was at "rock bottom." He said he believed the program had made progress.
However, despite the Red Storm returning virtually its entire team that competed in the College Basketball Invitational postseason tournament last season, St. John's finished six games under .500 in Big East play for a second consecutive season.
Roberts said he thought an NIT berth this season "would be another step for our players and our program" for the Red Storm (17-15).
Whoever coaches St. John's next season will have a strong nucleus. The Red Storm return every player but forward Anthony Mason Jr.
UConn coach Jim Calhoun said after St. John's defeated UConn in Tuesday's Big East Tournament opener, he expects the Red Storm to be among the top five or six teams in the Big East next season.
