Oregon Suspends Jeremiah Masoli, LaMichael James

Oregon coach Chip Kelly suspended star quarterback Jeremiah Masoli for the 2010 season on Friday. It is the second such season-long suspension Kelly has had to hand down on a star player in the last year -- remember LeGarrette Blount? Masoli pleaded guilty earlier Friday to a felony second-degree burglary charge, essentially acknowledging he and former teammate Garrett Embry lifted valuables from a fraternity house this offseason.

Ducks athletic director Mike Bellotti said Masoli's fate came down to whether he faced a misdemeanor or heavier felony charges. The Lane County District Attorney's Office accepted the felony plea but reduced it to a misdemeanor. Oregon acknowledged the severity of the crime and followed through with its suspension threat. Embry had been booted off the team weeks earlier as a result of the burglary.

Kelly's long day continued when he decided to suspend tailback LaMichael James, another of the team's offensive stars, for at least one game during the 2010 season. In the same courthouse, James pleaded guilty Friday to a misdemeanor physical harassment charge after a recent domestic incident with his now former girlfriend.

This is a huge hit for the Oregon program, considered an early Pac-10 favorite thanks in large part to the presence of Masoli and James.

There is plenty of hope for the 2010 season, but going it without Masoli could be trouble. The Ducks will likely look to sophomore Darron Thomas at quarterback, who has some experience and even led a near-comeback against Boise State two seasons ago. However, unproven quarterbacks are an easy and immediate concern for any team, particularly one whose offensive system thrives on smart decisions and play-making from its quarterback.
