It's bad enough that hockey fans everywhere have to search far and wide to find Versus, the NHL's flagship TV station -- assuming they can even get Versus at home. Looking your way, DirecTV.But the NHL's sad TV situation took on a slightly karmic twist this week during the league's GM meetings in Florida.
According to Greg Brady, a radio host on 640-AM in Toronto, the Boca Raton, Fla. hotel where the NHL's general managers stayed didn't even carry Versus, forcing some disgruntled GMs out in search of somewhere to watch Monday's thrilling Dallas-Washington game -- a Stars' shootout win.
This isn't the first time those in the NHL's inner circle have been shut out from watching live games. Just last season, during the conference finals, Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood told CBC Sports that Versus wasn't available at Detroit's team hotel in Chicago.
"I haven't even seen a game yet," Osgood said. "The hotel we were in doesn't have Versus.
"I saw a bit of the last game in a restaurant from a distance, but that was it. I put it on my phone live and try to get the updates as it goes along. I haven't seen them, but I've read about them on my phone."
The NHL's struggle to gain ratings on Versus is a long-standing theme now. The latest example came in the aftermath of the Vancouver Olympics, which featured a thrilling hockey tournament and massive ratings for the two United States-Canada showdowns. In an effort to try and capitalize on that success, Versus loaded up its live-game broadcast schedule coming out of the Olympic break.
Long story short, the NHL winter meetings just gave the league's GMs an opportunity to see what the league's TV status is right now -- and it's not pretty.
