Cleveland Shocks: Browns Unload Another Former First-Rounder

Evidently you can not trade enough first-round draft picks in one day.

The Cleveland Browns followed their trade of quarterback Brady Quinn to Denver with an even more surprising deal -- Cleveland traded linebacker Kamerion Wimbley to the Oakland Raiders for a draft choice believed to be a third-round selection.

Quinn's departure was expected once Jake Delhomme agreed to join the Browns. But Wimbley was a solid player who played well for the Browns in 2009, when he had a career-high 69 tackles and 6 1/2 sacks.

Wimbley was the 13th overall pick in the 2006 draft. The Browns moved down one spot in that draft, swapping positions with Baltimore. The Ravens took defensive lineman Haloti Ngata, the other player the Browns were considering. Ngata has been to the Pro Bowl. Wimbley will be going to Oakland.

Wimbley's play in Cleveland was always solid. He had a standout rookie season with 11 sacks, but never had double-digit sacks his next three seasons.

He still seemed like a player who could start at outside linebacker for several years, though he might never make the impact of a James Harrison or a Junior Seau. He was a good-to-very-good player drafted in a slot where expectations meant he had to be outstanding. Wimbley's departure leaves some serious questions at outside linebacker, where the Browns have Matt Roth (a restricted free agent), Marcus Benard and perhaps 32-year-old David Bowens.

Cleveland's remaining players and Wimbley's play in 2009 make his trade quite the eyebrow-raiser.

The Browns? They are a 5-11 team that, on one day, traded two of the players it has been saying for years are part of the team's future.
