Shaun HillWhen San Francisco reached out and nabbed quarterback David Carr off the free-agent market last week, it essentially spelled the end of Shaun Hill's time with the 49ers.

And now the official end of Hill's San Fran days appear to be upon us. According to Matt Maiocco of the Press Democrat, the Niners have traded Hill to Detroit for a 2011 seventh-round draft choice.

The Niners no doubt had hopes of a higher return for Hill, who started 14 games over the past two seasons, but instead settled for just unloading him.

The trade's a good one for Detroit, which desperately needed a backup quarterback behind Matthew Stafford, who will be entering his second year in the league. The Lions still employ Drew Stanton, but he's shown very few glimpses of brilliance in two seasons -- in spot duty last year, Stanton threw six interceptions and no TDs. Detroit opted not to try and retain Daunte Culpepper as its backup QB after he struggled through 2009 as well.

Hill comes to Detroit with a decent track record over the past three seasons. He's thrown 23 touchdowns to 11 interceptions since 2007 and actually put together a pretty strong 2008, throwing for more than 2,000 yards. But he relinquished the starting spot to Alex Smith midway through last season.

Making the fit in Detroit an even better one for Hill is that he broke into the league with the Vikings in 2002, where he spent three years under the tutelage of Scott Linehan, Detroit's current offensive coordinator.

Hill's acquisition means that the Lions enter the 2010 NFL Draft set at the QB position and free to focus elsewhere.
