A training reinjury to his right knee, which required surgery last year, has forced the postponement of a WBA title defense by Andre Ward (pictured at far right, with Mikkel Kessler) scheduled for April 24 against Allan Green slated for Ward's hometown of Oakland, Calif., that is part of the second round of Showtime's Super Six Super Middleweight (168 pounds) World Boxing Classic, his promoter, Dan Goossen, told FanHouse.com on Tuesday. The 26-year-old Ward (20-0, 13 knockouts) and the 30-year-old Green (29-1, 20 KOs) were scheduled to face each other as part of a double-header on the same night in which England's 32-year-old Carl Froch (26-0, 20 KOs) will defend his crown against Denmark's 31-year-old Kessler (42-2, 30 KOs), the latter of whom was dethroned by Ward.
"My physician, Dr. Warren King, who is also the orthopedic surgeon for the Oakland Raiders, is recommending four to six weeks of rehab and rest. Dr. King doesn't see anything that should hinder me beyond this point or in future fights," said Ward, a 2004 Olympic gold medalist.
"I look forward to getting back in the ring at 100 percent, and defending my WBA title in the Showtime Super Six World Boxing Classic," said Ward. "I apologize to Ken Hershman, Showtime, and all of the participants in the Super Six for any inconvenience this may cause."
Ward, who lifted the crown from Kessler via 11th-round, technical decision in November, said "The issue is that I came out of the blocks too fast in training camp with my running" while preparing for Green.
"I was supposed to gradually build up, and I went beyond what my trainer, Virgil Hunter, wanted me to do. I believe that's where all of the problems started," said Ward.
"This has been a good lesson for me to listen to my coach in the future, because he always warns me not to come out of the blocks of training camp too fast," said Ward. "But because I'm so motivated about this fight, I came out too fast, too early."
Goossen, who said Ward was scheduled for an MRI on Tuesday, told FanHouse.com that he believed the fighter would be prepared to return to the ring in May or early June.
"It's just a re-occurrence of an injury to the knee that he just had operated on last year from playing basketball. And when he got back into training camp for the Green fight, I guess that it got inflamed, and, ultimately, swollen and prevented him from running the past week or so," said Goossen.
"I don't have an exact day or date for the rescheduling, but I'm working on it right now with Showtime," said Goossen. "Everything's moving very quickly, but we're looking to reschedule it as soon as Andre's heatlthy, which is the end of May to early June."
