Suspended Wizard Gilbert Arenas opened up to Esquire's Cal Fussman on just how his infamous locker room gun show with teammate Javaris Crittenton went down. And yes, of course, Michael Jackson is involved. The general timeline has been known for a while, ever since Arenas copped a plea to gun charges last month. (Gil's sentencing is scheduled for later this month.) But there are some new details in Arenas's Esquire appearance.
The most surprising revelation is that immediately after Crittenton reacted to Arenas's ill-advised gun presentation, the pair sat down in the hot tub together. That's right: just minutes after Arenas, in the heat of a gambling dispute, presented Crittenton with four guns (including a gold-plated Desert Eagle), and after Crittenton responded by loading his own handgun, the 'Zard bros talked it out in a Jacuzzi.
Share It's an unbelievable detail missing from the initial reporting of the incident. The first reports (particularly those from Peter Vecsey of the New York Post) made it seem as though the teammates were on the brink of war. While each clearly made bad decisions, the fact that the pair worked it out between themselves immediately deserves attention. (And for the record, Vecsey took Washington Post writer Mike Wise to task for reporting that Crittenton loaded his weapon, a detail refuted in court documents. But Arenas repeats that charge here. Only seven people -- Arenas, Crittenton and five witnesses -- know the truth, and Arenas is the only one on public record.)
As for the King of Pop? When Crittenton first confronted Arenas about a disputed gambling debt on a team flight, Gil responded by playing MJ's "Beat It." Crittenton apparently did not feel like beating it.
The only notable item in the piece is the apparent return of Gil's semi-coherent stream-of-consciousness ramblings, a beloved facet of Arenas' persona for so long. After spilling on L'Affair Verizon Center, Arenas briefly discusses why he stands behind Tiger Woods, the difference between having sex and making love, and why he had a 1.9 GPA in high school.
