There are a lot of teams in baseball who play in cold weather cities, and as a result, when the regular season starts sometimes games are played in less than ideal conditions. Let's not forget an entire series between the Cleveland Indians and Seattle Mariners that was snowed out a few years ago in Cleveland. Well, cold weather in April isn't just limited to the teams in the northeast and midwest. No, sometimes in sunny, southern California, the temperature can drop to as low as 60 degrees on a spring day. Visitors to the area have long marveled at Californians huddling together like penguins in Antarctica just to share body warmth. These innovative new ways to survive have now been picked up by the Los Angeles Angels who have devised a new way to keep their fans warm, and set a world record at the same time.
On Tuesday April 6 all fans who attend the Angels game against the Minnesota Twins will receive a Hideki Matsui fleece blanket to wear during the game. At some point during the game the 40,000 freezing Angels fans will be prompted to put their red blankets on, and keep them on for five minutes in order to set the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people wearing fleece blankets.
It's one of the world's most cherished records that has stood for ages since the Cleveland Cavaliers set it way back on March 5 2010 when 17,758 Cavs fans donned their blankets and pleaded with LeBron James to stay in town after this season.
"We are very excited about this special opportunity," team spokesman Tim Mead said. "Setting this world record will be a unique and memorable experience for our fans, the first of many in 2010."This new record will probably stand for six days before the Twins open their new ballpark in Minneapolis, though the Twins have no blanket promotion scheduled. Their fans will likely bring them from home.
