The Mariners' visions of starting the season with a Felix Hernandez-Cliff Lee 1-2 punch are in jeopardy. Seattle's marquee offseason acquisition was suspended five games Wednesday by Major League Baseball for "intentionally throwing a pitch in the head area" of Diamondbacks catcher Chris Snyder during a Cactus League game Monday.
Though the transgression occurred in a spring training game, Lee will be punished during the games that actually count. His suspension is set to begin Opening Day, but will be tabled pending a hearing if he appeals -- and Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu says he will.
MLB has been known to knock a game off the usual five-game sentence for starting pitchers who go hunting for heads, which essentially renders the punishment meaningless. We'll see how the Mariners decide to play it with Lee and whether MLB agrees to dock a game or two on appeal.
Lee probably shouldn't count on it, as his intent was fairly obvious. The lefty's buzz job on Snyder occurred in the third inning; two innings earlier, the two had gotten tangled up as Lee went to back up a play at the plate. Snyder, who was on deck at the time, was trying to get into position to tell the runner whether or not to slide.
