The focus of Florida's pro day was Tim Tebow's reworked delivery, but Wednesday's workout may have been even more important for a pair of Tebow's Gator teammates. For cornerback Joe Haden, Wednesday will likely earn him a couple of million dollars, while linebacker Brandon Spikes likely lost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Haden came into Wednesday's pro day needing to prove that he wasn't as slow as he showed at the NFL Scouting Combine. Spikes didn't run at the scouting combine, and he came into pro day needing to knock down rumors that he was hesitant to run because of his lack of speed.
In Haden's case, he aced the test. Haden had blamed his 4.58 40-yard dash on a bad back. If he had run an equally slow time at the pro day, he'd have likely fallen into the mid to late first round -- his production at Florida would have probably kept him from falling any lower than that. By running in the high 4.3's/low 4.4's, Haden once again is the clear top cornerback in the draft and likely will be a top 10 pick. Teams who were hoping to see Haden slip to the middle of the first round are likely somewhat disappointed tonight.
Spikes' day could not have gone much worse. Scouts had been worried that Spikes was not going to turn in a great time, but he failed to break 5.0 seconds in either of two runs (NFL Network's Mike Mayock had him at 5.1). A five-flat 40-yard-dash is OK for an offensive lineman, slow for a defensive lineman and absolutely brutal for an inside linebacker. Spikes was considered one of the best inside linebackers in the draft, but even with impressive production it will be hard for scouts to overlook his lack of speed. As a two-down linebacker, it's hard to see how Spikes will go higher than the third round.
