"The job does have some perks, like when Tiger Woods came to see me and gave me some tips," Biden said. "Hey guys, they were golf tips!"
Biden delivered a steady stream of one-liners at the annual Radio and Television Correspondents Association Dinner in Washington on Wednesday night. The audience included Fox News host Bill O'Reilly, CNN's Wolf Blitzer and politicians-turned-talking heads Jesse Jackson and Fred Thompson.
Referring to former Rep. Eric Massa's claim that White House Chief of Staff Emanuel approached him naked in the showers of the congressional gym, pointed his finger at him and appealed for his health care vote, Biden said, "By the way, Rahm was only pointing his finger."
Biden also touched on his recent trip to the Middle East.
"It's great to be back at a place where a boom in housing construction is actually a good thing," he cracked, referring to Israel's announcement during his visit that it planned to build 1,600 homes in disputed East Jerusalem. "Trying to negotiate a lasting peace between the Palestinians and Israelis is tough, but it's a hell of a nice break from health care."
Biden received applause and uproarious laughter for his final joke, in which he told the audience that "the only media outlet in this town that's ever given me a fair shake is Amtrak magazine."
Mere hours before the dinner, Biden put his foot in his mouth with another of his infamous, unscripted gaffes.
During his comments at the White House celebration of St. Patrick's Day, Biden referred to Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen's mother as dead, when in fact she is alive.
"His mom lived in Long Island for 10 years or so ... God rest her soul," Biden said.
After a pause, he realized his mistake.
"Wait ... your mom's still ... your mom is still alive. It was your dad that passed," he said. "God bless her soul. I gotta get this straight."
Cowen seemed nonplussed, calling Biden, the first Irish-Catholic vice president, "one of us."
