Germany's 27-year-old, former interim king, Vitaly Tajbert, of Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, has been elevated to the title of undisputed, WBC super featherweight (130 pounds) champion, inheriting the position vacated by former belt-holder, Humberto Soto, of Tijuana, Mex., organization officials announced on Wednesday.Tajbert (19-1, six knockouts) has a two-bout winning streak, having positioned himself to replace the 29-year-old Soto (52-7-2, 32 KOs) by earning the WBC's interim crown with November's unanimous decision victory over previously, once-beaten, Humberto Gutierrez ((26-2-1, 19 KOs), of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mex.
Soto had been ordered to meet Tajbert, but requested the WBC's permission to remain super featherweight king until after rising to lightweight (135 pounds) for Saturday night's unanimous decision over 33-year-old, former world champion, David Diaz (35-3-1, 17 KOs), of Chicago, at The Dallas Cowboys' Stadium in Arlington, Tex.
The win over Diaz earned Soto the WBC's 135-pound belt that was vacated by 28-year-old Edwin Valero (27-0, 27 KOs), of Venezuela.
Valero has risen to junior welterweight (140 pounds) to face 26-year-old Lamont Peterson (27-1, 13 KOs), of Washington, D.C. in a nontitle bout.
Soto will make the first defense of his crown on June 5 at Yankees' Stadium, in New York, against Lamont's 24-year-old brother, Anthony Peterson (30-0, 20 KOs), who earned that opportunity with Friday night's three-knockdown, third-round stoppage of 31-year-old Juan Ramon Cruz (16-8-1, 12 KOs).
Soto-Peterson will take place on the undercard of a WBA junior middleweight (154 pounds) title defense by New York's Yuri Foreman (28-0, eight KOs) against former three-time world champion Miguel Cotto (34-2, 27 KOs), of Puerto Rico.
