Talk about a domino effect. We already knew the headhunting suspension Cliff Lee received from Major League Baseball earlier this week was more or less a result of his collision with Diamondbacks catcher Chris Snyder during a Cactus League game.
Now it turns out Lee apparently suffered an abdominal strain in the same incident -- an injury serious enough to compel him to fly back to Seattle for treatment Friday and one that could keep him on the shelf for the start of the regular season.
Lee already was looking at having his first official start as a Mariner pushed back thanks to the five-game ban he was slapped with Wednesday. This injury will complicate matters, sidelining him for at least a week as we head into the homestretch of spring training.
"It's not a good feeling,'' Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu said. "We're extremely excited about having him in the rotation. We'll have to evaluate and see where we are. It makes the decision-making process harder. We'll let it run its course and re-evaluate in a week.''
All of this from one potentially innocuous convergence Monday afternoon.Lee and Snyder got tangled up on a play at the plate, as the pitcher rushed to back up a throw home and Snyder, who was on deck, moved up to help signal his baserunning teammate. Two innings later, Lee threw a pitch over Snyder's head and Snyder moved toward the mound, prompting both benches to clear.
Fast-forward to Thursday, when Lee felt discomfort during his regular bullpen session between starts. That led to a flight home Friday for an ultrasound and an infusion of platelet rich plasma -- it's mmm, mmm good.
All the Mariners can do now is sit and wait, hoping rest will provide a quick cure.
